    This 3D-based course covers working with a variety of media that engage and challenge hand-building skills, including clay and jewelry construction, tie-dyeing clothing and creating usable hanging planters. Produce work that is functional, exciting to make and offers many avenues of personalization. The diverse work from this course will help students begin to develop an advanced art portfolio that can assist them in creative endeavors, and have cool new artwork they can wear or share! All art materials are provided in class.

    Students will step into the world of rhythm with a hands-on exploration of drum sets, hand drums and world beat percussion instruments. All equipment is provided. No experience required.

    Discover the challenges engineers and scientists face in reaching and living on a distant and inhospitable planet: Mars. Work with a team to apply technologies developed for space travel and living in extreme environments to design a future Martian colony. Create models and perform physical science experiments in a lab to help understand how to travel to and live on Mars, and use your scientist’s notebook to record diagrams and observations about rockets and building structures, culminating in a colony designed by you and your team. Let’s go to Mars!

    Summer with Books & Batter takes place at the SUNY Adirondack Culinary Arts Center/Seasoned restaurant at 14 Hudson Ave., Glens Falls, NY 12801.

    In this hands-on course, students will develop essential kitchen skills, then put them to the test rolling pasta, preparing quick breads, creating frozen mousses and decorating cupcakes. Emphasis will also be placed on the importance of kitchen safety and sanitation practices. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of baking techniques, sauce making and decoration, with practical experience in a range of culinary areas.

    Recipes will be chosen from youth-themed books: “Harry Potter,” “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,” “Moose on the Loose” and the Max & Ruby story “Bunny Cakes.” There will be a brief discussion about the books and the food related to them. Students will not be asked to read books in advance.

    Please note:

    • Students must wear closed back and toe shoes, such as sneakers — do not wear Crocs, flip-flops or sandals.
    • The Culinary Arts Center is a facility that processes nuts and other allergens. When registering for this program, indicate any food allergies on the Medical Release Form.
    • Students must be dropped off no more than 15 minutes before the start of the program, and students must be picked up promptly after the course ends. There is no before or after care for this course.
    • Students will use cutting utensils and cooking elements in these classes.
    • Students should bring an apron or old shirt and something to secure hair back.
