Learn about the amazing apple tree and how you can start your home orchard or improve existing trees. We will discuss apple varieties, basic tree biology, orchard maintenance, pest management, tree selection and grafting. We will also demonstrate basic pruning and management for maintaining healthy trees in our college orchard.

Join us for a hands-on, interactive experience at the SUNY Adirondack arboretum to develop essential tree identification skills. In this course, explore the diverse species of trees and shrubs, and learn to identify key characteristics such as leaf structure, bark texture and overall tree shape. We will also discuss differences between native and exotic species, as well as the basics of tree and shrub care, focusing on the importance of maintaining healthy trees. Participants will have the opportunity to practice tree-pruning techniques to ensure proper care.
Led by Jeff Speich, a former Supervising Forester at NYSDEC and owner of Baumwerks Consulting, this course offers expert guidance and practical experience for anyone interested in trees and their care.
